Mass Swedish Study Links Autism to Mothers

Research and Autism News News By State

December 8, 2015- "Mass Swedish Study Links Autism to Mothers"- A recent Swedish study, which looked at children born in the country over the last two decades, is the first to link the imbalance call polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to autism spectrum disorder. Researchers found that a maternal diagnosis of PCOS led to an increased risk of ASD in their children by 59 percent. While the mechanisms that explain the link between maternal PCOS and ASD were not fully explored in this study, researchers found no observed differences between boys and girls in the study. Until the link is explored further it is too early to make specific recommendations to clinicians in terms of care for pregnant women with PCOS.
